About The Miles Lassiter Family of Randolph County, North Carolina
Please sign in to see more. Miles Lassiter was born a slave in Randolph County, North Carolina, circa 1777. He was owned by Ezekiel and Sarah Lassiter. However, Ezekiel died while Miles was still very young and the will stated that Miles should remain in the care of his widow Sarah Lassiter until her death when he should be sold. Despite his official slave status his life was largely that of a Free Person of Color. He was married to a Free Woman of Color, Healy Phillips. Between them they were able to acquire approximately 400 acres of land. Miles freedom was finally purchased by his wife after Sarah Lassiter's death in 1840. Healy died circa 1845, and Miles died on 22 June 1850. Together Miles and Healy had seven (7) children: Emsley,Abigail, Colier, Susannah, Wiley, Nancy, and Jane. Emsley moved to Indiana in 1832 along with
several others from the Lassiter Mill/Uwharrie community. Abigail never married and died in 1920 at age 105. Colier, Wiley, and Nancy each married and continued to live, farm, and raise their families in the community. Susannah apparently died young. There is no real information about her after the early 1850s. Jane died sometime after 1893. She also apparently did not marry.
At the time of Miles' death in 1850, he was the only African American Quaker in the State of North Carolina. He requested membership in March 1845,and was received in June. His story is chronicled in my book, Miles Lassiter (circa 1777-1850) An Early African American Quaker from Lassiter Mill, Randolph County, North Carolina: My Research Journey to Home.
